Student of the Month

January 25, 2024

To be Student of the Month, a teacher must recognize a student who is excelling in their class, their kind contributions, and being a good role model to their fellow peers. Our Journalism class chose a student for this months’ student of the month. We decided to let the Journalism class pick this month’s student since we thought it would provide an amazing representation since it shows how students acknowledges other students hard-work and achievements. We wanted to highlight Yasmin Casas, an 11th grade student and athlete at Seaside High.

When I told Casas that she was picked for student of the month, she expressed “I feel honored to be picked as student of the month. To be honest I was surprised to be picked at first.” But it was no surprise for us. One of the students that nominated Casas is Anthony Perez, an 11th grade student at Seaside High. Perez mentions how  amazing of a student Casas is and how she is a great role model to other pupils. Casas says, “Her hard work that she put in her classes like JROTC and her AP classes.” He also added how kind and caring Casas is towards others, making her a good person overall.

Casas is a part of the cross country team. I reached out to her xc captain Michelle Garcia, also an 11th grade student and athlete at Seaside High. When I asked about Casas’s sportsmanship, Gracia replied, “It was good, she tried really hard and was dedicated to the sport.” Conditioning starts during the summer for cross country, but Casas had to leave to go to Mexico. That did not stop her from training for the upcoming season though. She continued to condition by running while she was visiting Mexico. Not only you would need to condition for this sport but you also need to have a strong mentality/mindset. Her determination and dedication for the sport is uunmatched.

As a student athlete, it can be stressful balancing everything. “I usually procrastinate with my work but I try to keep up with my work from pilling up.” Casas expressed. Like other students, procrastinating is very common. The pressure and stress also comes along the way. She revealed that school can be demanding with all the work and deadlines teachers provide.

The class that Casas finds enjoyable is Culinary, this class is where she excels the most and Casas feels that this subject is something she enjoys outside of school. Cooking is something she really loves and enjoy during her spare time. “The class gives me an opportunity to be creative and work with my hands that’s something I really enjoy doing in and outside of school” Casas explained.

She manages to balance all of these activities with her social life. She created a schedule where weekdays would consist of school and homework and during the weekend, she will clock in to work and even try to hang out with friends. With having a good time management, she will be prepared for her future career. “When I’m older I would like to be in the medical field working with people in something like a ultrasound technician or nurse,” she said.

Casas’s thinks about making her family proud and be a role model to her younger siblings and setting good examples for them. Being chosen as Student of the Month highlights her accomplishments and continue doing amazing things in the future.
