Homecoming, Spirit Week, and Student Thoughts

October 26, 2024

At Seaside High School Spirit Week is advertised a bunch as a big event that many people enjoy. However, when going to school on the first day of the spirit week not many people participate even though it was publicized so much. It may be that it is embarrassing to others but Spirit Week was made to be dressed up for and shouldn't be embarrassing at all. This article will highlight what Spirit Week was, different opinions on the topic, and if students truly care about it.

Since homecoming is coming up, its theme is Graveyard Gala which ties into Halloween. Spirit Week is used to get everyone ready and excited for the big event which is why each day’s theme connects to homecoming.

Monday was Vampire Day which initially seemed challenging to dress up for but it was suggested that students dress up in red and black. In fact, most of the themes for most days seem challenging to dress up for. Joe Hernandez-Islas, the Senior President of ASB was asked if the spirit days were easily accessible to everyone in the school. He stated, “I do think that the themes are accessible because we offer a lot of the materials (like the vampire teeth on Monday) in order to dress up and recently we have been doing themes that are more known and easy to dress up.” One of the important things Hernandez noted is that since leadership is handing out materials for spirit wear it's accessible to everyone to dress up and have fun.

the theme is for Monday and Tuesday at The Greek.

Twin Day (Tuesday) was where two people would match outfits and essentially be twins. For example, Sam Moore and Jamie Rodriguez, two seniors at Seaside High wore matching clothing. The theme is easy to dress for as you can just wear simple outfits that match each other.

Farmers Versus Crows (Wednesday) is very confusing for many. If leadership were to hand something out that day what would it be? Not everyone has a crow costume or a farmer costume on hand making it hard to even be included. Since Kaliah Rullan, a sophomore at Seaside High dressed up as a farmer for this theme, she was interviewed for her opinion on spirit week, Rullan said “I do dress up for spirit week as I think it's fun to participate in school events where nobody can say anything about it.” She thinks that since there is a day to have fun and dress up for themes it shouldn't be embarrassing as it's a day just for it. If asked if any topics made any sense she stated “... I think they can come up with more creative themes and to set up a poll for students to pick what they wanna dress up as.” She thinks that students should have the opportunity to pick out what they wanna do for spirit week as the students are the ones to dress up for it.

The next theme is spooky crocs and socks and pajamas, this information is not consistent everywhere it says so. In the Greek, it only says socks and crocs but on Instagram and in front of the Makerspace it shows spooky crocs and socks and pajamas, the advertising doesn't show dependable information everywhere.

Freaky Friday is where students dress up as teachers and teachers dress up as students which is based on the movie Freaky Friday released in 2003 where a mother and daughter switch bodies.

To hear more student's opinions I spoke to Sana Hadid a sophomore at Seaside High for her opinions on spirit day. When asked if she likes it or not she stated “I'm in the neutral position. I don't hate it, I’m just not enthusiastic about it, the few times I had participated it felt awkward as nobody dressed up for it.” Since not many people dress up for it it may make it awkward for those who participated. If asked if she thinks it was accessible to everyone she said “I feel like leadership chooses the themes as they saw it on TikTok and thought it would be fun since other schools did it but when it happens here nobody dresses up”. Hadid thinks that it's just the school and their lack of spirit on spirit wear that's why nobody dresses up, even though students had fun at another school doesn't mean it will be the same here.

Since everyone has different views on spirit wear not everybody thinks it is a fun day where they can express themselves. It may be because the theme is hard to dress for because they don't have the materials for it or they just don't enjoy the themes at all. Spirit week is still a time to express yourself, have fun with the themes, and make memories. It just may not be the most fun thing for others.
