‘Ballet Folklorico’ means ‘folkloric dance’ or more known as Baile Folklorico. This dance reflects on the beliefs, culture and traditions of the Hispanic community. Two Seaside High students, Brianna Munson-Perez and Ruth Perez both choreograph and performed this traditional dance in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month.
Brianna Munson-Perez, an 11th grader was asked by Mandee Scorpiniti, a Digital Media and Leadership teacher, if she could dedicate a dance of Baile Folklorico for this month. Munson-Perez already did this dance for last year’s Hispanic Heritage Month. She loves performing, especially dancing Baile Folklorico. “By doing this dance, I am able to spread my culture with others,” Munson-Perez stated. Not only did she perform this dance, she also choreographed it all by herself. She is very passionate about dancing. Her dancing journey began when a soloist visited her school. At that moment, she was inspired and wanted to become just like them one day.
Munson-Perez joined a dance company called, “Ballet Folklorico Aguila Real.” In this dance class, she met her dancing partner Ruth Perez. “We got along quick because we regularly attended the class and often partnered together. Ruth is sweet and make easy
on-going conversation with everyone” Munson-Perez explained.
When I asked Ruth Perez, a 10th grader about when she became interested in dancing, she replied, “I got the passion for dance from my neighbor because she was dancing and asked me to join.” Dancing makes her feel excited and filled with joy every time she gets the chance to perform. Perez also mentions that she adored Brianna’s choreography and how it was such an amazing experience, she would love to able to perform with Brianna again.
